Basketball is world wide passion. You can play at your local park or in your driveway. Use this article to get more of an understanding of the game of basketball.

If you have the ball a lot, learn to execute a crossover. Being able to dribble the ball with both hands and crossover between the two will make you a better player. It has to be done fast to be effective. If done correctly, a good crossover helps you get past your opponent and to the rim.

You must have good balance to shoot well. Of course, pros may make baskets from a great distance while falling off the court, but this isn’t standard. Taking a shot when you are off balance will probably lead to a turnover. Good balance while shooting will lead to landing more baskets.

It is important that you practice layups. Layups comprise approximately 80 percent of all shots. When you practice, run toward the net, and then get a high jump in so you can smoothly shoot. Perfecting this skill will enable you to get to the rim effortlessly during a game.

Free throws are as much mental as they are physical, like other parts of the game. Without a strong mindset, your body simply goes through the motions to take the shot. Be relaxed and concentrate on the basket and you will help you make more free throws.

Never practice only against the zone. While a great portion of a game will be concentrated in the zone, your rivals could opt to go to man-to-man covering to keep you guessing. If you haven’t prepared yourself for that, you might lose your game very quickly.

In order to handle the ball correctly, spread your fingers out. This will keep the ball from getting away while you hold it. Do not allow the palm of your hand to make contact with the ball. When passing and shooting the ball toward its target, the sole contact point should be fingers.

Practice your footwork and control the position of your feet at all times. Stepping your toe in a baseline with a ball in your grip will mean that you’re out of bounds. You could also be the reason for a turnover if you get called for walking when you take more steps than allowed without dribbling. Being aware of your body movements can give you an advantage on the court.

Videotape your games to see what you do right and wrong. Do you see anything you could do differently? Stay honest when you’re assessing yourself, but don’t over criticize yourself either. At times, it can help to see the truth of who you are, not as you imagine yourself.

If the opposing team is guarding you to much, you can try a pass between your legs. This can be practiced by dribbling the ball as hard as you can between the legs while you step in either direction. Mastering this technique can give you a significant advantage.

Use deception by looking elsewhere when you make passes. Doing this is a great way to confuse your opponents. Not only will they not see the pass coming, they may think a pass is going in the opposite direction. It’s quite a play when done properly.

You need to constantly disrupt your opponents in order to be a great defensive player. Make them feel uncomfortable and to where they’re second guessing their next move. Be aggressive in the moves you execute. Keep them from deciding what moves to make. If don’t play aggressively, you opponent will run you down. Instead, you move first and throw them off their game.

Now you should know how to be a better basketball player. All you need to do is work hard and use what you have learned. Once you understand how to play the game you will only continue to get better. Whatever you do, remember to have fun!
