Bob McCabe joined the staff at Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society in September of 1990. Currently, McCabe is the Director of the Athletes in Service to America program. He is responsible for the design, funding and administration of the Athletes in Service to America program at five sites across the country.

The program features over 65 current and former collegiate student-athletes who provide workshops, tutoring and mentoring in schools and community centers to reduce violence and enhance academic success. Funded in part with a $1 million grant from AmeriCorps, President Clinton's National Service initiative, Athletes in Service Corps members perform over 7,000 hours of community service each month. The Athletes in Service grant is the largest in Sport in Society's history and funds one of the most ambitious community service initiatives featuring college student-athletes ever developed. vView highlights of the Athletes in Service to America Program under McCabe's direction. He has used his speaking, writing, training and research skills in a wide range of Center programs.

McCabe was one of the original members of Project TEAMWORK, an initiative to combat violence, racism, sexism and anti-Semitism. During his three years with the program, McCabe made more than 300 presentations to over 90,000 high school and middle school students in Massachusetts and across the country.

Subsequent to his work with Project TEAMWORK, McCabe conducted a year-long study of intercollegiate athletics, the College Student-Athlete program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Working with college presidents, athletics administrators, coaches and student-athletes, McCabe analyzed current approaches to academic oversight, athletics administration, community outreach and personal development in collegiate athletics programs at seven NCAA Division I-A programs.

McCabe is a native of the Boston area. He attended Harvard College where he majored in Government and played varsity basketball. Upon graduating in 1983, McCabe played professional basketball in Europe. After returning from overseas, he enrolled in graduate school at the University of Kansas to study counseling psychology. While at Kansas, McCabe worked for the Kansas University Athletics Corporation providing academic and personal counseling to student-athletes.

McCabe is married to Maureen Devlin and they have two children, Maia and Leah.
