Dear Colleague,

We all understand the importance of talking with our young athletes about the physical and emotional harm caused by anabolic steroid use.

If you're a head coach show everybody in your program - from Varsity to JV to the freshmen team - this new DVD Steroids: True Stories Hosted by Curt Schilling and the Words Can Work booklet produced by Blake Works.

If you have assistant coaches, watch the DVD together and talk about how to discuss steroids with your athletes. Ask yourselves, "Is there anyone in our program that we suspect is using steroids? Has their appearance changed that much? Are we hearing rumors?" If we're not willing to have the conversation, we're not going to fix the problem.

Steroids: True Stories Hosted by Curt Schilling DVD (20-minutes) 2004 World Champion Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling tells how Craig lifted weights and abused anabolic steroids. Craig and his parents talk about their five-year "nightmare". His sister urges others to seek help for someone who may be using steroids. Nate, an accomplished athlete, describes how he stays strong naturally. Dr. Roberto Olivardia, Harvard Medical School, answers frequently asked questions about anabolic steroids.

Words Can Work: When Talking About Steroids by Jeanne Blake (52 pp) This useful guide underscores the messages in the DVD and will inspire further discussion about steroids. Young people tell their true stories of using anabolic steroids and regretting it, while others describe how they avoid steroids and achieve their goals through hard work. Experts offer strategies and the words to help young people, their peers, and families talk about these topics.
