CAREERS IN SPORTS CONFERENCE FOR YOUNG WOMEN

Boston, MA -- On March 14, 2000, Sport in Society joined with the New England Women's Fund in inviting over 300 young women to Northeastern University to attend the first annual "Careers in Sports Conference for Young Women."

Keynote speaker
The event featured keynote speaker Jackie MacMullan, Senior Editor for Sports Illustrated magazine, who related stories from her career as one of the first prominent female sportswriters in the country.

Breakout sessions
Following the keynote presentation, the young women attended three breakout sessions, each led by women from a variety of professions in the sports industry.

Breakout leaders included Shawn Polk, Head Women's Basketball Coach at the University of Massachusetts � Boston; Kim Zayotti, Senior Director of Athlete Marketing at Woolf Associates; and Mary Lou Thimas, Senior Assistant Commissioner at the East Coast Athletic Conference, and many other fascinating women.

A major success, this event was the first joint venture between Sport in Society and the New England Women's Fund.

New England Women's Fund
The New England Women's Fund (NewFund) increases opportunities for women and girls in New England by awarding $50,000 grants to region-wide collaborative projects and sponsoring educational programs. The NewFund places special emphasis on sports and the related effects on women's and girls' self-esteem, health, creativity, and education.
