2001 Sport in Society Hall of Fame Inductee

MR. DICK SCHAAP

Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society, along with the rest of the sports world, suffered a tremendous loss with the sudden death of our longtime friend, Mr. Dick Schaap.

We at Sport in Society offer our sincerest condolences to the Schaap family.

Dick Schaap was a true champion for the mission of Sport in Society, serving as the annual emcee of our awards banquet for the last 10 years.

As previously announced, we are inducting Dick Schaap into the Sport in Society Hall of Fame.

Schaap will join such fellow luminaries of the sports world as Muhammad Ali, "Red" Auerbach, Wilma Rudolph, Jackie Robinson, Arthur Ashe, Rafer Johnson, and Bill Russell.

Out of respect for the family�s wishes, we have chosen to honor Mr. Dick Schaap at our True Heroes of Sport Awards Banquet on the newly rescheduled date of WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24, 2002.

Invited guests are Muhammad Ali, Billy Crystal, Jerry Kramer, Joe Namath, Bo Jackson, and more ...

Schaap Was a pioneer of sports journalism and a witness to sports history.

A three-time Emmy Award winner, Schaap dedicated his career to highlighting how sport can, and does, break barriers and make a difference in society.

One of sports' most highly honored and respected journalists, Schaap serveD as host of ESPN Magazine's The Sports Reporters, The Sporting Life with Dick Schaap and ESPN Classic�s Schaap One on One.

He was with NBC from 1971-80, serving as a correspondent for the NBC Nightly News and The Today Show, and served as theater critic for ABC's World News Now.

In total, Schaap was the recipient of six Emmy Awards, one CableACE Award and the Women's Sports Foundation Award for excellence in covering women in sports.

He also received the Sport in Society Excellence in Sports Journalism Award, co-presented by Northeastern University's School of Journalism.
