Laila Brock is the assistant director of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program, a joint effort of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society and the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS).

The multiracial, mixed gender MVP program is the first large-scale attempt to enlist high school, collegiate and professional athletes in the fight against all forms of men's violence against women.

dart Previous Experience

Brock is a native of Washington Pa., and a graduate of Pennsylvania State University. While at Penn State, she was a member of the women's track and field team and was elected a co-captain of the team during her last two seasons of competition. She was selected as an All-ECAC and All-Big Ten team member as well as an Academic All-Big Ten team member. In 1997, she was a member of the USATF Junior National track and field team that traveled to Cuba to compete in the Junior Pan-Am Games.

Upon completion of her undergraduate degree in 2000, Brock began her graduate studies in counselor education while completing her fifth year of competition for Penn State. In 2001, she gained a graduate assistantship at the Morgan Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes. She served as an academic mentor for several student-athletes, providing guidance in study skills, problem-solving and time management.

From 1999 to 2001, Brock served as the student representative on Penn State's Commission for Women Students' Athletic Committee. She helped facilitate discussion between female student-athletes and athletic administration to create positive change for women's athletics on campus.

Brock holds a bachelor's degree in communications and media studies research and a master's of education in counselor education and college student counseling.

Brock has goals to help broaden the MVP program to different regions the country, to help create more involvement between MVP and professional sports, and to obtain a Ph.D in athletic administration and policy.
