Dr.
Mary A. Hums, Ph.D. is a research fellow for Sport in Society's
Disability in Sport Program.
Hums
is an Associate Professor in the Sport Administration Program
at the University of Louisville.

In addition to being a Past President of the Society for
the Study of Legal Aspects of Sport and Physical Activity
(SSLASPA), she is an active member of:

Previous Experience
Prior
to coming to the University of Louisville, Hums served on
the Sport Management faculty at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst,
directed the Sport Management Program at Kennesaw State
University in Atlanta, and was Athletic Director at St.
Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, IN.
She
worked as a volunteer for the 1996 Summer Paralympic Games
in Atlanta and the 2002 Winter Paralympics in Salt Lake
City.
Author
Hums,
along with Lisa Pike Masteralexis and Carol Barr, co-edited
the 1998 textbook Principles and Practice of Sport Management,
and co-authored the 2001 book Profiles of Sport Industry
Professionals, with Matt Robinson, Brian Crow, and Dennis
Phillips; and is currently writing Sport Governance and
Policy Development, with Joanne MacLean.
Her

Presentations
She
has made over 90 presentations to various scholarly associations
both in the United States and abroad. Her main research
interest is policy development in sport organizations, especially
in regards to inclusion of women, people with disabilities,
and racial/ethnic minorities into the management of sport.
Research Fellow
In
addition to Disability in Sport, she is also Research Fellow
for the North American Society for Sport Management.
Awards
She
was a 1993 recipient of a Georgia Alliance for Health, Physical
Education, and Dance Research Award. In 1997 she was named
Outstanding Teacher in the College of Food and Natural Resources
while teaching at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst,
and in 1999 the University of Louisville Disability Resource
Center named her Instructor of the Year.
In
2000 she received the NASPE Sport Management Council�s Outstanding
Achievement Award, and in 2001 the University of Louisville
Alumni Association presented her with the Red Apple Award
for contributions to students� lives through teaching. In
2002 she received the Conference USA Award of Excellence
for the University of Louisville.
She
is a 1996 inductee in the Indiana Softball Hall of Fame.
Education
She
holds a Ph.D. in Sport Management from Ohio State University,
an M.A. in Athletic Administration as well as an M.B.A.
from the University of Iowa, and a B.B.A. in Management
from the University of Notre Dame.
