Jeff O'Brien is the Massachusetts Director of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) Program at Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society. The multi-racial, mixed gender MVP Program is the first large-scale attempt to enlist high school, collegiate and professional athletes in the fight against all forms of men's violence against women. In addition to his work with MVP, O'Brien has presented at numerous professional conferences and community organizations in several states. He was also a member of the team that travelled to Japan to perform MVP training to the US Marines stationed oversees. In 1995, O'Brien was named the initial director of Canisius' Athletes in Service to America site. Athletes in Service utilizes former college student athletes as role models for urban youth on the subjects of gender violence prevention, conflict resolution, cultural diversity and media literacy. During O'Brien's tenure, program participants volunteered over 85,000 hours of service to resource- poor communities in Buffalo. In 1992, he developed and organized the first date rape and dating violence workshop series for sports teams at Canisius. Peer educators facilitated mixed gender workshops with each team on campus. His work in social activism began with Canisius College's Athletes Helping Athletes program. From 1987-1989, O'Brien spoke at dozens of Buffalo high schools about the importance of goal setting, decision making and balancing academics and athletics. Also during this time he was a member of Canisius' Drugs and Alcohol Task Force, speaking with hundreds of high school students about peer pressure and the possible consequences of drug use. In 1991, O'Brien was named the Director of the Athletes Helping Athletes Program at Canisius College, coordinating the community outreach efforts through the athletic department and for all campus National Student Athlete Day activities. O'Brien holds a BA in English and MS in Education from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. At Canisius, O�Brien was co-captain and a four year starter at tight-end. He was an All-ECAC and All-America selection in 1987 and 1988 and remains the school record holder for career receptions and touchdowns. During and after graduate school O'Brien coached college football as well as high school football, basketball and track. |
