MVP Outreach Specialist
Mentors
in Violence Prevention
(MVP) Program
Kay is an Outreach
Specialist for the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP)
Program. Kay works with the MVP team, facilitating gender violence prevention
workshops in Massachusetts high schools and colleges. The workshops are
designed to raise awareness on the issue of gender violence and encourage
young men and women to become active bystanders empowered to confront
sexist and abusive behavior.
During
his three years as an outreach specialist, David has conducted hundreds
of gender violence prevention workshops, trainings and large scale presentations
for thousands of Massachusetts high school and college students, faculty,
and administrators.
Jane Doe Walk for
Women's Safety
Additionally, in the past two years, David has coordinated Sport in
Society's participation in the Jane Doe Walk for Women's Safety. In his
two years as captain of the team, David has rallied nearly 150 walkers
who raised approximately $3,500 for the Massachusetts Coalition of Battered
Women Service Groups . The money raised helps fund direct services for
battered women and their children, such as shelter, counseling and advocacy,
and hotlines. The walk also provides monetary support for year round community
education, public awareness and gender violence prevention programs.
Athletes in Service
to America
In 1995, David returned to Sport in Society, dedicating a year out
of his life to national service as a volunteer with the Athletes
in Service to America (AIS) program. AIS is a national violence prevention,
academic success, and cultural diversity appreciation program which seeks
to improve the lives of students from resource poor inner-city neighborhoods.
During his year of
service, David facilitated nearly seventy interactive conflict resolution,
diversity appreciation, and gender violence prevention workshops in the
Boston Public Schools.
Additionally, he mentored
and tutored young people at the YMCA, Roxbury Boy's and Girl's Club, and
the Nuestra Comunidad Youth Center where he co-founded and directed a
free summer camp for 7-12 year olds.
Racial Report Card
David's involvement with Sport in Society began with an internship
in the summer of 1994. David worked as a research assistant, participating
in the process of writing and editing the 1994 Racial
Report Card, the Center's major research report which indicates areas
of improvement, stagnation and regression in the racial and gender composition
of professional sports personnel.
