Amber Kilian is a Training & Outreach Specialist for the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), a mixed-gender racially diverse program, at the Center for Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University. As a Training & Outreach Specialist she provides Massachusetts High School and College students with the tools needed to actively work together towards ending men's violence against women. This leadership program motivates student athletes and student leaders by utilizing a unique bystander approach to raise awareness and speak out against rape, battering, and sexual harassment.
Prior to working at the Center, Amber was involved in numerous organizations committed to the goal of helping others. A few of these organizations include Guardian Ad Litem, CASIE, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. As a court-appointed Guardian Ad Litem she provided a strong voice and advocated for abused and neglected children in the 8 th Judicial Circuit of Florida. With CASIE (Cadets Advocating Sexual Integrity and Education) at the United States Air Force Academy, CO (USAFA) she worked as Sexual-Assault Education Representative for Squadron 2. In high school and college she was a mentor and "big sis" with the Big Brothers Big Sisters programs in Bozeman, Montana and Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Although born in Panama she grew up in Bozeman, Montana where she joined the Bridger Bowl Freestyle Ski Team as a freshman in high school. In 1997 she was ranked the number one woman freestyle skier in the USSA Northern Division. She competed twice at the invitational United States Junior National Freestyle Championships as one of the top 60 female skiers in the US. She also raced downhill for the USAF Academy Ski Team during college.
Amber graduated Cum Laude from the University of Florida in the spring of 2004 with a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology and minor in Education. While at UF she was admitted into the UF Golden Key International Honor Society, Pi Beta Phi Sorority, Dean's List, and participated in Intramural volleyball and flag football. In addition, she worked as a research assistant in a clinical and health psychology lab studying Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and its link to Dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Before transferring to the University of Florida, Amber attended two years of college as a Behavioral Sciences Major at the USAFA, CO. Amber plans to begin her Masters degree in Counseling at Northeastern in May of 2005.
