BOSTON,

As the country celebrated National STUDENT-Athlete Day on April
6 with events across the U.S., Sport in Society planned its
own celebration to honor the accomplishments of student-athletes
in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The third-annual
Massachusetts Student-Athlete Citizenship Awards were held
at Northeastern University's Matthews Arena on May 27, 1999.
The event was co-sponsored by the Massachusetts
Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA)
The event
featured three interactive panels on issues relating to the
lifestyle of high school and college student-athletes.
Each panel
featured two high school students, one NU student-athlete,
and one professional expert. The first panel, Wellness
/ Healthy Lifestyles, discussed training and substance
abuse. It featured candid comments on performance enhancing
drugs like "Creatine" and steroids.
The panelists
included:
-
Judy
Phalen
(Northeastern University's Program Director for Alcohol
and Other Drug Education)
-
Jamie
Sims-Bello
(former University Womens track athlete and graduate student
at NU)
-
Karen
Ching
(Natick H.S.)
-
Alexander
Mulvey
(Framingham H.S.)
The second
panel, Sportsmanship, created an open forum on the
relationship between players, officials, and coaches.
The panelists
included:
-
Bob
Bigelow
(former NBA first round draft pick and current anti-tobacco
consultant for the MIAA)
-
Adrianna
DiGregorio
(Northeastern University sophomore volleyball student-athlete
majoring in History)
-
Mary Ellen Bingham (Boston
Latin H.S.)
-
Mark
M. Rocca
(Andover H.S.).
The third
panel, titled Citizenship/ Community Service, sought
to motivate other student-athletes to become involved in their
communities.
The panelists
included:
-
Jeff
OBrien
(Director of Sport in Society's Mentors in Violence Prevention
Program, MVP)
-
Ruben Claudio
(Northeastern University engineering major and member of
the soccer team)
-
Lisa
Andruskiewicz
(Beverly H.S.)
-
Kara
Keating
(Framingham H.S.)
The program
was moderated by Liane L. Young,
a junior at the Windsor School and news anchor, host, and
reporter for the award-winning weekly New England Cable News
TV program, "Kids Talk Sports."
The format
of a moderator who is a peer to many in the audience was very
successful. Former Sport in Society C.O.O. Jose Masso led
questions and answers from the crowd on relevent issues.
The presenting
sponsor was Reebok International Ltd., with the Massachusetts
Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and Sport in Society
as co-sponsors of the event.
The citizenship
awards certificates were presented on stage to all participating
students by William N. Gaine, Jr.,
Deputy Director, MIAA; and Zoe Aponte,
Associate Director, The Reebok Foundation.
