The Disability Resource Center (DRC) cordially invites the Northeastern University to its 12th Annual Recognition Ceremony.

This ceremony is held annually to honor Northeastern faculty, staff, and departments for their extraordinary contributions to students with disabilities or who are Deaf or hard of hearing. The ceremony will be held this year on Thursday, May 11th, from 12- 1PM at the Frost Lounge in the Ell Building. Reception follows from 1-1:30 PM. A free luncheon will be provided.

Providing service that is appropriate for the needs of all people is something that everyone at any institution should do.

The mission of the DRC is to enable all students to have equal access to higher education through support services and advocacy. Staff at the DRC are also committed to promoting independence and self-advocacy among students with disabilities, Deaf students, and those who are hard of hearing.

For the past twelve years, the DRC has been proud to recognize those who have provided exceptional service to students with disabilities or who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Those members of the university community who will be honored at this ceremony embody the DRC's mission, and take it a step further.

For this reason, they have earned the title "Dedicated Advocate."

The recipients this year include:

  • Art Taylor, Co-Director, Urban Youth Sports, Center for the Study of Sports in Society
  • Professor Geoffrey Davies, Chemistry Department
  • Assistant Dean Rose Doherty, Criminal Justice and Liberal Arts
  • Assistant Director Richard Doyon, Student Financial Services
  • Professor David Garelick, Physics Department
  • Professor Keith Saunders, Sociology and Anthropology Department

Art Taylor has been a program leader at the Center for the Study of Sport in Society for the past 13 years.

In that time he helped develop Project TEAMWORK, the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program, and AmeriCorps' Athletes in Service to America. Taylor also served as educational director for the movie Hoop Dreams.

In 1996, he created Urban Youth Sports as a vehicle for translating Sport in Society's mission into direct services for young people in Boston and other urban areas.

Urban Youth Sports impact has been broadened by the Boston Youth Sports Congress, which Taylor and Kevin Fitzgerald co-founded with Boston's Mayor Menino.

For more than 20 years Taylor has worked with children and youth as a Sunday school teacher and a coach.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, May 11th to help honor these dedicated advocates.
