Sport in Society Director receives Honorary Degree from NewBury College

Dr. Richard E. Lapchick, director and founder of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University, receives an honorary degree today at the commencement of Newbury College in Brookline.

Lapchick is considered a national expert on the social and cultural issues that affect athletes and the world of sports. Since its inception in 1984, the center has attracted national attention for its pioneering efforts to ensure the education of athletes from junior high school through the professional ranks.

Lapchick is also executive director of the National Consortium for Academics and Sports, a group of more than 190 colleges and universities that have adopted many Sport in Society's programs.

Previously, Lapchick oversaw the development of the center's Project TEAMWORK, Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) Program, Athletes in Service to America, Urban Youth Sports, and SportsCAP, among others.

He is a regular columnist in the Business Sports Journal and serves as adviser to the Rev. Jesse Jackson and to the Rainbow Commission on Fairness in Sport, as well as to the players associations of the NBA, NFL, and Major League Baseball on the issues of racial hiring practices in sport.
