Sport in Society hosts Massachusetts Student Athlete Day at Northeastern University
(4-12-07) Boston, Mass. - Student athletes from across eastern Massachusetts gathered for the 11th annual Massachusetts Student-Athlete Citizenship Award Ceremony, hosted by the Center for the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association. The award ceremony and �Builders of the Future�The Power of Leadership� panel was held from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Blackman Auditorium at Northeastern University. Featured speakers included: Master of Ceremonies Ed Berliner, Peter Roby, Peter Smith from the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Associateion, and Daynia LaForce-Mann, Head Women's Basketball Coach at Northeastern. The presentation also feature two student panels Watertown High School's Lisa Conti, Milford High School's Tyler Allen, and Scituate High School's Diana Crowley and Heidi Sheehan all fielded questions about how coaches develop the whole athlete. The second panel featuring Notre Dame Academy's Rebecca Gwaltney, Reading Memorial High School's Jeff Arena, and Scituate High School's Nick Mullin and Mike Steele answered questions about building leaders on and off the field.
The Massachusetts Student-Athlete Citizenship Award recognizes students who excel in academics, athletics, citizenship, and community service. High school principals and athletic directors hand-selected this year�s winners to participate in the ceremony. The theme of the awards is �Builders of the Future� and will focus on the importance of being an active citizen. Student-athlete panelists will host a question and answer session with their peers about the power of leadership.
