Shannon Spriggs is a manager for Mentors and Violence Prevention National

She has been at Sport in Society since 2004, first serving as the site coordinator for Athletes in Service to America where she assisted with the continuance of the Athletes in Service program by helping to develop the new model, recruiting athletes, training them for service and ensuring school-based service was as well executed as possible. She became the Manager for Urban Youth Sports, Training and Outreach in October of 2004 and since that time has worked to optimize program effectiveness and develop best practices for program expansion. She also trains for Mentors in Violence Prevention.

From 2001-2004, Spriggs worked as a graduate assistant with the College Bound Program at Boston College where she coordinated academic enrichment programs for urban youth to better prepare them to excel at the country�s most selective colleges and universities. During that time, she also supervised 100 high school students and 10 instructional staff engaged with the bi-weekly program.

She worked as an academic counselor with Kansas State University�s Top 10 college football program during 1999-2000 academic year. At KSU, she monitored the student-athletes� academic progress, advised them regarding course load and academic issues, and tracked initial eligibility and admissions for all incoming student-athletes.

From 1996-1999, Spriggs served as Academic and CHAMPS/Life Skills Coordinator at the University of Texas at Arlington, her alma mater. In this capacity, she performed a wide range of activities including: developing and delivering a comprehensive support program for 200 student-athletes, one-on-one academic counseling, handling of NCAA academic compliance issues, implementing freshman orientation course, instituting career development seminars, initiating community service projects, coordinating student-athlete admissions and registration, advising the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and monitoring academic progress.

She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Higher Education Administration at Boston College. She hopes to graduate in August of 2006. She earned her MA in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on Business and Counseling in 1998 from the University of Texas at Arlington, and her BA in Journalism/Public Relations in 1996 from UTA.

Spriggs played Division I basketball for the University of Texas at Arlington. While at UTA, she set the NCAA record for most shots blocked in a single game for the 1994-95 season, and finished third in the nation in blocked shots that same season. Shannon was a four-sport letter winner in high school where she played volleyball, basketball, softball and ran track.
