Junior Coaches Academy

The Junior Coaches Academy (JCA) provides additional sports related opportunities for students in grades nine to 12 and a standard for effective coaching. As student athletes age, the sports opportunities available to them decrease. JCA creates more opportunities for youth interested in alternative ways of participating in sports by teaching them leadership skills that make it possible for them to seek employment as junior coaches. Through discussion, reflection, experiential learning, and a 30-hour volunteer service commitment, youth coaches develop a better understanding of the influence they have on youth. Through the JCA youth coaches will gain self-confidence, understand their personal motivations, and develop an interest in becoming leaders.

The second objective of this training is a new, proactive approach towards making a significant impact on the future of youth sport coaching in Boston. JCA targets the younger generation of coaches with the goal of creating a consistent standard for coaching.

Leadership Component

Understanding that leadership is one of the most important qualities for a coach, the JCA has a separate component dedicated to promoting strong leadership. The JCA training coordinators will cover goal setting, motivation, leadership style, and team building strategies. Through discussion, reflection and experiential learning, youth coaches will develop the necessary skills to be strong leaders on the field and in their communities.
