Ermlich spent the spring of 1997 as a volunteer basketball coach/mentor for the Jo Jo White Growth League working with middle and high school students at the Shaw School in the West Roxbury section of Boston, Mass. He was also a Sport in Society representative and chaperone for the Growth League Walt Disney World trip in December of 1997. The program, in conjunction with the highly-acclaimed documentary film "Hoop Dreams", brought 500 young people and their parents from the Boston Housing Authority together with the members of the documentary during the spring of 1995. After viewing of the film, they participated in small-group workshops on the important lessons in the movie. Additionally, Ermlich was a key member of the team that put together the educational outreach and grant proposals for the project. Ermlich served as a facilitator at the annual National STUDENT-Athlete Day events in April of 1997. He lead a discussion group of 30 high school students on conflict resolution. The event was held at Northeastern University's Matthews Arena for over 400 student-athletes from 126 area high schools.
