Staff Directory • Links Mission Statement Disability in Sport engages in research, education, advocacy and programming activities related to athletes with a disability in sport. Disability in Sport creates more access, equality, inclusion, opportunity, respect, and legitimacy for athletes with a disability in the sporting environment. The Problem People with disabilities have been excluded and marginalized from sports organizations and the sports industry. By excluding people with disabilities from sports organizations, the segregation and separation of people with disabilities in sport and society is reinforced. By not being embraced by sports organizations and the sports industry, people with disabilities are not recognized as legitimate athletes, and not viewed as integral members of sports culture. Program Overview The Disability in Sport Program works to bring athletes with a disability from the margins to become integral members of the sporting community. Ongoing research is conducted related to opportunities for athletes with a disability in sport. In the area of education and advocacy, Disability in Sport works with national and international sports organizations to advise and consult on the inclusion and integration of programs and policies for people with disabilities. The initiative works to advance sports opportunities for athletes with a disability within legal policy, and aims to impact and engage the media to create more awareness about sports opportunities for athletes with a disability.
