BOSTON, MA � Urban Youth Sports, a program of Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society, is proud to announce the achievement of a generous funding grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF).

The Urban Youth Sports Health Connection project has been awarded over $431,000 for program funding dating August 2000-July 2003.

The RWJF Local Initiative Funding Partners program selected Urban Youth Sports out of an original 313 strong applicants, of which 78 were chosen to submit full proposals and only 21 projects were awarded the RWJF grant.

The UYS proposal was the result of a collaboration with the Mayor's Office, Boston Parks and Recreation, Children's Hospital, Boston Medical Center, and the Community Sports Organizations.

The lead funding partner was Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mass. and Director of Development Sylvia Stevens-Edouard, with matching funds provided by the Mass. League of Community Health Centers and their Executive Director James Hunt.

UYS also worked closely with Community Health Center Directors Paula McNichols (Brookside) and Dr. Azzie Young (Mattapan).

The RWJF is the nation's largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health and health care.
