AmeriCorps Member Position Description

Minimum Requirement:
Two years of a varsity college sport

Outcomes/ Goals:

• Young people enrolled at assigned school will have the opportunity to participate in health, wellness, and exercise programming both in school and after school encouraging a lifetime of healthy living.

• Parents, teachers, and community members will become more active participants at your assigned public elementary school and in the community as volunteers.

• An infrastructure to support young people will be built by strengthening family, school, and community bonds.

Responsibilities:

1.) Work collaboratively with:
• Fellow corps members to provide organized recreational opportunities during recess.
• Fellow corps members and school staff to assist in teaching physical education.
• Fellow corps members to provide after-school health, wellness and recreation programming two days per week at assigned public elementary school.
• Fellow corps members and Urban Youth Sports health center staff to provide parent/ family health workshops and access to information and resources.
• Fellow corps members to involve school and community volunteers in service activities at your assigned Boston Public elementary school and in the community.
• Fellow corps members to teach life skills sessions at assigned Boston Public elementary school and in the community.
• Fellow corps members and site coordinator to assist 10-15 community non-profit organizations to achieve success in collaborative events.

2.) Complete timesheet and journal on a weekly basis.

3.) Complete other duties as assigned by Site Coordinator.

Orientation/Development Plan:
• Pre-Service training including orientation to AmeriCorps rules and regulations, Sport in Society programs and Northeastern University.
• Orientation and training provided by assigned public elementary school staff.
• Attend weekly staff meetings and professional development opportunities and scheduled by site coordinator.

Time Commitment:
• 1700 hours (approximately 40 hours per week).
• 10-month minimum contract, with up to 12 months to complete hours.

Required Hours:
Monday-Friday as dictated by school schedule; Tuesday-Thursday, 3:30-6:00, some weekend commitments.

Benefits:
• $10,000 stipend (paid out 2 times per month).
• $4,725 education award upon completion of service.
• Health insurance, paid by Americorps.

• Interest paid on loans if member successfully completes service.
• Monthly travel reimbursement.
• Tuition assistance, depending on each operating site.
