AmeriCorps Program

Feature photoAbout Us > Program Operation

AIS operating sites recruit former college student-athletes to work with school children in resource poor neighborhoods. Corps members spend thousands of hours working in elementary schools and local community centers. AmeriCorps participation stipulates that corps members commit a minimum of 1,700 hours of community service over the course of one year in exchange for a $10,000 living stipend.

Members who complete their full-term of service earn an additional $4,725 educational award to be used toward undergraduate or graduate school expenses. Full-time members are also eligible for health insurance, loan forbearance, and tuition assistance. Members also receive additional benefits depending on their operating site.

AIS is the only AmeriCorps program nationwide that recruits corps members with collegiate athletic experience. The program capitalizes on the unique educational, athletic, and team-oriented experience of student-athletes. Corps members are deployed in teams of 3-4 members to a specific elementary school where they will work collectively in the spirit of teamwork and collaboration to deliver the program.
